By following our instructions, you can correctly calculate the wardrobe with your own hands. This work is not as difficult as it seems at first glance, so even a novice furniture assembler can do it.

We will assume that you already have a ready-made drawing, made with your own hands in a graphic editor, which determines the number and method of fastening various parts. When making a model of a sliding wardrobe, you should take into account the thickness of the material and edges. This factor is very important, especially for calculating boxes.

We calculate the dimensions of the cabinet and its contents

To clearly demonstrate how to do the calculation yourself, we will simultaneously show an example for a two-door cabinet, the dimensions of which are as follows:

  • height – 2200mm;
  • width – 1600mm;
  • depth – 600mm.

We will use aluminum Alutech as a sliding system; we will choose a C-shaped profile shape. Of the two doors, one will be made of laminated chipboard, the second will be mirrored. The closet will have two separate sections, one for a clothes hanger, the second will contain shelves and drawers.

The first thing we need to do is prepare a drawing where we will enter the dimensions obtained as a result of the calculation.

We calculate the height for the side stand as follows: [height of the wardrobe] – [thickness of the roof]. Considering that the standard thickness of a chipboard sheet is 16mm, in our case the result will be 2184mm (2200-16).

The sidewall will be the same width as the depth of our cabinet, that is, 600mm.

To calculate the bottom of the structure, it is necessary to subtract the thickness of the two sidewalls from its total width, we get 1568mm (1600-32).

As for the length of the base, its size will be equal to the length of the bottom of the structure (1568mm). Its standard height is 60mm. Note that it will not be possible to make a smaller height due to the peculiarities of the operation of the edge banding machine.

To make it more convenient to calculate the opening where the shelves and drawers will be located, we will make it a multiple of 50mm. Considering that the section in which the drawers are located needs to be moved away from the center by a distance of 50 to 70 mm, we will make its width 600 mm. In this case, the drawers will not touch the door and the pile seal glued to it.

The formula for calculating the internal stand will be as follows: [cabinet height] - [podium height] - [cabinet roof thickness], for us it will be 2108mm (2200-76-16).

We calculate the depth of the internal shelves and the stand: [cabinet width] -100mm (for a sliding door system), we get this value to be 500mm.

Based on the fact that the width of the section for drawers and shelves is 600mm, we calculate for the second compartment: [width of the cabinet] - [thickness of the two outer frames] - [width of the section for drawers] - [thickness of the internal partition]. Entering all the values ​​we get 952mm.

Calculation of cabinet drawers

When calculating the front of the drawers, it is necessary to subtract from 4 to 6 mm from the width of the opening for space for gaps, while 3 mm will be enough for gaps in height. It is also necessary to take into account the PVC edge around the perimeter of the facade; it can be 1 or 4 mm (minimum and maximum value).

To make it more convenient to calculate the sidewalls of the boxes, we will make them multiples of 50mm, we will get 450mm. The height of the enclosing sides should be 40 or 50 mm less than the façade. That is, if we made the facade 200mm, then the side sides will be 160mm. We calculate the back of the drawers as follows: [opening width] - [thickness of guides] - [side of the drawer]. We get 542mm (600-26-32).

For the bottom of the boxes that we make ourselves, we choose DVPO material. The bottom can be nailed from below, or special grooves can be made for its installation. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the thickness of the material (usually 4mm) and the depth of the groove, it can be 5-8mm. In our case, we decided to make the bottom stuffed, respectively, its size is 570x446mm.

The clothes hanger is made from a chrome-plated pipe; we used a Joker system with a 25mm cross-section, equipped with two flanges for fastening.

Considering that the section for clothes has practically no shelves to give rigidity to the structure, it is necessary to make a screed in the center of the opening. Its width will be the same as that of the opening (952mm), and its height will be 200mm.

The parameters of the lid for the sliding wardrobe correspond to the width and depth of the structure; sometimes a small canopy is made for lighting. It doesn't matter what shape it will be. If you plan to install backlighting, it is enough to increase the depth by about 150mm.

The back wall is made of fiberboard; as a rule, it is made of printed material. Considering that the standard sheet size of this material is 2750x1220mm, a one-piece design will not work. Therefore, the wall is assembled from two pieces.

We chose the Alutech aluminum profile, shape MS120, its parameters are indicated by the manufacturer. Necessary calculations:

sliding doors to the wardrobe are installed on an opening of 2108x1568mm;

the upper and lower guides will be long – 1568mm;

the vertical profile will have a height of: [opening height] - [side profile height], we get 2063mm (2108-45);

height and width of the door 2003x762, height = [vertical profile height] -, width = [door width] –;

The height and width of the mirror for a sliding wardrobe door is 2001×759, height = [vertical profile height]-, width = [door width]-.

The above calculations are quite enough to make a sliding wardrobe with your own hands.

Width&Height: measurement features

According to the standard, the width of the door leaf is considered to be 500 mm. Narrower facades can be purchased to order, but experience shows that they are not very practical. When opening, the door falls towards the force and the profile touches the lower running track, even worse when the door falls out of the track.

A facade with a width of more than 1000 mm is also not very convenient to use. Although there are no special restrictions on the installation of such structures, you need to choose those options that actually turn out to be more practical.

The handle profile is made of a special plastic and at the same time impact-resistant composition; its length can reach 5500 mm. The parts are cut depending on the height of the wardrobe. When calculating wardrobe doors and choosing a profile, take into account the rigidity of the handle, which is determined by the width of the door leaf. The wider the facade, the higher the strength of the framing structure.

Overlapping of façade components

Having calculated the sliding wardrobe doors correctly, in the open state, when one of the parts is hidden behind the other, you will see only 1 of the handle profiles of the front facade.

The number of canvases is determined based on the width of the cabinet and its internal contents. Under no circumstances should the door block access to the cabinet sections. When calculating an opening for a three-door structure, the sum of the width of two of the three parts of the facade (rear) should not exceed the distance from the end of the product to the next section (of one opening).

Before installing the wardrobe, make sure that the floor in the room is level. Even with a slight tilt, the canvas will randomly roll to one side.

To start calculating the wardrobe doors, measure the opening. Find the height and width of the niche, for example, h=2500; b=1400.

Features of horizontal façade calculations

Doors must overlap in the opening. The canvas should be larger than the middle of the opening by one handle profile. Measure the length of the profile and add this figure to the width of the cabinet. Divide this amount by 2, resulting in the size of one door leaf in width.

The number of overlaps depends on the number of doors. So, the profile of the handle of one span overlaps the edging of another, and so on in a checkerboard sequence. Then the sum of overlaps is added to the width of the niche and divided by the number of facades.

Consider using examples to calculate the width of wardrobe doors:

  • for a two-door opening:

profile width - 24 mm, opening - 1400 mm;

1400+24=1424/2=712 mm

The size of 1 canvas is 712 mm.

  • for a three-door cabinet:

opening width - 1600 mm, profile - 26 mm;

If there are three parts of the facade, two overlaps are obtained, therefore, 26 + 26 = 52 mm.

1600+52=1652/3=550 mm - the size of one door in width.

Calculation of door size according to the height of the wardrobe

Using this scheme it is not difficult to calculate. Subtract 40 mm from the height of the niche. Experts, giving instructions, advise taking 5 mm more, but practice shows the opposite. A distance of 40 mm will be enough to insert the facade into the W-shaped upper guide.

See for yourself how easy it is to calculate the height of wardrobe doors:

The height of the niche is 2400 mm.

2400-40=2360 mm - the height of the door leaf mounted on tracks.

Installers say that in practice there have been cases when it was necessary to insert a door into an opening with a 30 mm gap. It is possible to perform such an operation, but it is not recommended. The façade section is difficult to ride on the rail, and the installation itself is labor-intensive and time-consuming. Sometimes such difficulties arise when the calculation of the dimensions of the wardrobe doors was carried out with an error.

Calculating the filling of a door structure

The last thing to be found is the indicator denoted H(h) - depth. Even a schoolchild can cope with such a calculation. The façade filling is framed with an aluminum frame. To calculate it, you will have to subtract the profile width from the general parameters of the door.

Example of depth calculation

After looking at the example, familiarize yourself with the calculation process.

Important! The width of the handle is measured to the nearest millimeter.

  1. Since there are two handles, multiply the resulting value by 2: 16x2=32 mm.
  2. The width of the handles is subtracted from the width of the facade: 712-32 = 680 mm - width of the filling.
  3. Measure the distance of the upper and lower horizons separating the canvas from the height of the niche. For example, it is 12 and 47 mm, respectively.

Then the door height is 2360 mm;

The sum of the upper and lower horizons is 59 mm.

2360-59=2301 mm - door filling height.

Dimensions:

opening - 1400x2400;

door -2360x712 - 2 pcs.;

facade filling - 2301x680 - 2 pcs.

For a mirror or glass facade, do not forget to subtract the thickness of the silicone seal from the filling - 1 mm. It is placed on the glass sheet around the perimeter, therefore 2 mm are subtracted from the height and width indicators.

How to calculate profiles for a sliding wardrobe door

Let's look at an example:

width - 24 mm;

Since there are two handles, we multiply the number by 2: 24x2=48 mm.

712-48=664 mm - length of the upper and lower tracks.

The task: to understand the calculation of sliding wardrobe doors with your own hands has been completed. The algorithm of actions is easy to remember, and having familiarized yourself with the principles of calculations, you do not have to call a specialist to assemble the cabinet, but do the work yourself, saving part of the family budget.

There is nothing complicated in calculating the dimensions for the door structure of a sliding wardrobe. With a basic set of skills and knowledge, every craftsman can easily install a wardrobe façade or install a door separating two rooms in a house.

Calculation of facades is a fairly important procedure, because they are the face of the finished product and in some cases (for example, MDF facades) it will not be possible to change anything if there is an error.

In this article I will try to explain how calculations are made for all the main types of furniture facades (with the exception of radius ones). We will disassemble it on the basis of a box with external dimensions of 600 x 300 mm.

So, let's start with swing facades. In order for the doors to open, it is necessary that they do not rub against each other and against the body; technological gaps are provided for this.

They are 2-4 mm (more - they look ugly, less - they rub).

Personally, I prefer to make gaps of 2 mm.

Separately, I note that the dimensions must be calculated for each module separately, that is, if you are assembling a kitchen in which there are 3 floor drawers and 3 wall drawers, then the dimensions must be calculated for each drawer separately, that is, 6 times - this way you will insure yourself against a number of possible mistakes.

Front width calculated by the formula:

w =(W/n)-3 mm

Where w- width of the facade, W- box width, n- number of facades (by width)

Some furniture makers subtract 4 mm, but in my opinion the gaps are too large.

Height of facades. When calculating height, there are no clearly defined formulas - you should be guided by common sense and some simple subtleties.

For example, let's calculate the dimensions of the facades for several kitchen modules.

Red The dimensions of the box are marked in color, blue - gaps, orange - dimensions of facades.

So, the dimensions of the box are 730x450 mm

We calculate the width using the formula (450/1)-3 and get 447 mm. (there are 1.5 mm gaps on the sides, which will allow you not to cling to adjacent cabinets, which will have the same allowances).

In terms of height, we decide to make 3 facades, of which 2 are large, 300 mm each. We take into account that the optimal distance between adjacent boxes is 2-3 mm , and between table top and top facade 5 mm (so that the facade does not cling to the drip tray, which is located on the kitchen countertops). As a result, subtracting these values ​​from the height of the box, we obtain the height of the small facade 121 mm

730mm - 300mm - 2mm - 300mm - 2mm - 5mm=121 mm

Let's move on to another example: calculation of facades for a hanging cabinet. Its peculiarity is the presence of two hinged facades, as well as an overhang of the upper horizon, which seems to cover the doors, giving the entire cabinet a finished look.

Based on the overall dimensions of the cabinet: 636 x 600 mm, we calculate the width of the facades. (600/2)-3 = 297.

Knowing that the thickness of the upper horizon is 16 mm, and making a 3 mm gap between it and the facade, we get the height of the facade (636-16-3) = 617

Now let's move on to individual subtleties of calculation.

1. When calculating the dimensions of facades made from laminated chipboard, edged with a 2 mm PVC edge, do not forget to subtract another 4 mm from the dimensions, both in height and width (edge ​​thickness on both sides)

2. When calculating the dimensions of swing facades for corner cabinets, it is necessary to take into account that there are two types of corner loops (+45, +30 g). Visually they do not differ from each other; the difference is noticeable only on the assembled body with a hung facade. Therefore, the installation diagram for the corner hinges that you purchase should be checked with the seller.

Let's analyze the calculation for each using the example of a corner cabinet with a distance between the walls (in the façade opening) of 300 mm.

So, option 1 facade turns out loose its size should be 1 mm less than the width of the niche, that is, equal to 299 mm.

Measurements must be as accurate as possible. It is necessary to take into account uneven walls, the presence of baseboards and baguettes.

Sliding system selection

There are many mechanisms for sliding wardrobes and dressing rooms. The operating principle of all systems is the same. they move to the side along the rails, revealing one or another part of the internal space. The system structure is made of metal or aluminum. The latter are cheaper, but wear out faster during daily use. The systems differ in the material of manufacture and the profile (open or closed) of the guides. They can be single or double. Sliding systems can be upper or lower and differ in configuration. Depending on the intended dimensions, furniture may have more than two doors. The quantity corresponds to the number of rails in the guides. The calculation of wardrobe doors also depends on the number of overlaps of the door panels.

How to calculate door sizes

Although closets can have custom dimensions, they should strive for some standards. For safety reasons, the door height should be no more than 2600 mm, and the width of one leaf should be 450 mm. The recommended depth is from 400 mm to 600 mm. The formula for calculating sliding wardrobe doors is quite simple:

  • The height of the door (In dv) is equal to the height of the opening (Vpr) - 40 mm.
  • The door width (W dv) can be calculated using the formula: W dv = (W dv + 20mm)/2, where W dv is the width of the opening, 20 mm is the increase for door overlap, 2 is the number of door leaves. To calculate three door leaves, the increase is 40 mm.
  • Length of the upper and lower guides: L ex = W ex.
  • Vertical profile length: L vert = H d.

To avoid mistakes, it is better to calculate the wardrobe doors after assembling the frame and installing the internal partitions and shelves.

Facade filling

The facade is the main and visible part of the wardrobe. In addition to the classic filling options (chipboard (laminated chipboard) or mirror), there are many other interesting solutions. This is painting on glass or mirror. Embossed glass, sprayed glass or stained glass designs. Facades are offered with finishing made of artificial leather, decorative plastic, as well as natural bamboo or rattan. Filling options can be combined. Door inserts can be framed with profiles of various geometric shapes. Depending on the filling material and the type of sliding system, the calculation of the size of the wardrobe doors may differ slightly. When calculating combined doors, the height of the filling is reduced by 4.5 mm if its thickness is 40 mm, respectively, by 1.5 mm if the filling thickness is 10 mm. The glass and mirror filling on the reverse side must be reinforced with an impact-resistant coating.

Today, a great variety of these systems are offered. Every year, thanks to modern technologies, sliding doors become more beautiful and more reliable.
I, of course, will not talk about all sliding systems, but will focus on perhaps the most common one, which is most used in sliding wardrobes.
To work we need the following tool:
✓Drill with a set of metal drills.
✓Rubber mallet.
You can use a regular hammer and a wooden point.
✓Electric miter saw with cutting disc for aluminum for cutting profiles.
✓Screwdriver with hex bits sizes (4 and 5 mm).
You can turn it manually, it’s even better.
Let's start with calculating the doors for the wardrobe.
There is nothing complicated here.
To make it more clear, as an example, I took a wardrobe with a built-in chest of drawers with three doors, which I talked about in the last one.

And the assembly process itself is from another cabinet, because it contains mirrors.

First of all, in order to accurately calculate, we need to know the size of the opening (the internal size of the cabinet).
Example:
The overall dimensions of the wardrobe with built-in chest of drawers are height 2380 mm and width 2700 mm.
Inner size: height, as a rule, is the height of the riser. From 2380 minus the thickness of two chipboards (top/bottom) and minus the supports (50 mm), we get 2300 and width from 2700 minus 32 mm thickness of two chipboards (side posts).
The opening size (internal cabinet size) is 2300×2668 mm.
We calculate the sliding doors according to the table.

  • Intermediate horizontal profiles 859 mm long – 6 pcs.
  • Chipboard inserts (10 mm) dimensions 730×874 mm – 6 pcs.
  • If there was a 4 mm mirror, then its size would be 2198 × 872 mm - 1 piece.
  • Upper guide 2668 mm long – 1 pc.
  • Bottom guide of the same length 2668 mm – 1 pc.

Advice.
It is better to cut the upper and lower guides 1-1.5 mm shorter.

  • Lower rollers – 6 pcs.
  • Upper rollers – 6 pcs.
  • Self-tapping screws for assembling the main frame of sliding doors for a hexagon – 12 pcs.

As a rule, the rollers and these screws come in one set (2 rollers and 4 screws) + two adjusting screws for the rollers.

  • Dustproof pile – 13.56 m.p.
  • Brake – 6 pcs.
  • Silicone seal for mirror – 6.14 m.p.
  • Self-tapping screws 4.5x60 mm for assembling intermediate profiles, which must be purchased separately - 12 pcs.

It happens that these screws are not used, but I always use them to fasten intermediate profiles.

Let's start assembling the doors for the wardrobe.

✒First of all, we cut all the necessary profiles to the specified sizes on a miter saw.
note that I cut the lower horizontal profile (where the rollers are inserted) with a wooden strip inserted in advance. This is necessary for a more accurate cut.

We order inserts for doors together with cutting chipboard for the cabinet body.
But you can cut it yourself. Even if the cut (rolling pin) is not clean, it’s no big deal – the frame will cover everything.
✒Drill holes in the profiles.
To assemble one door, you need to drill 6 holes in the vertical profiles. One ø5 mm hole at the top and two holes at the bottom.
You need to drill through two walls of the profile.
The holes should be like this:

  1. In the inner wall of the profile - ø5 mm.
  2. In the outer wall of the profile - ø9 mm.

This is necessary so that the heads of self-tapping screws and screws can pass through it freely.


Advice
.
It is better to make all holes on a drilling machine. It will be much more accurate.
✒We first collect the core, namely the upper horizons, intermediate and lower horizons.



You can do it in the reverse order, but then you need to insert an insert into the lower horizon for support.
As a rule, all inserts fit quite tightly. And if the inserts are made of MDF with PVC film, then it’s even tighter.

Therefore, all craftsmen use a mallet with a rubber attachment, and when it is necessary to hit harder, they additionally use a wooden attachment so as not to damage the profile.

that assembly (especially doors with a mirror) is best done on a flat surface, for example, a large table. But, if this is not possible, then you can assemble it on a flat floor, and use any wooden beam no less than the width of the horizontal profile as a stop, placing it between the door being assembled and the wall.


There is one more thing I would like to draw your attention to.
This means that if the inserts are made of MDF with PVC film, then the edges of these inserts must be rounded - this is a prerequisite! If this is not done, then there is a danger of the film wrinkling when the insert enters the profile.


We continue assembling the sliding doors.
✒After the core has been collected, place it on the edge and carefully stuff the vertical profile on one side, and then turn it over on the other side.

✒We connect the entire resulting structure with self-tapping screws and at the same time install the upper rollers.


✒ We install the lower rollers separately and screw in the adjusting screws.

As you can see in the photo, the insert is missing due to the fact that the roller was crushed. Sometimes you have to bet.

.
It is better to fasten the intermediate profile after the main frame of the sliding doors is ready, i.e. There is no need to drill holes for fastening on vertical profiles in advance, so as not to make a mistake. We measure in advance from the top edge to the center of the hole, which is called after the fact, when only the core without vertical profiles is assembled and write it down. And then we transfer the dimensions to the installed vertical profile.
Important!
All corners of the frame must be absolutely even.

Mirror doors are also assembled.
Just before assembly, a silicone seal is applied around the perimeter.



I use an adjustable wrench to hold the profile so that it does not twist.
